D day today

Hi guys,

Just thought I would put a little personal note on here.

I have a young dog that is having its first start at Parklands this afternoon.

It is in race 6 no 3 Cheryl's Courage, named after my wife who is recovering from Breast cancer and has undergone Chemo and radiation for the last 7 months.

So I invested in this pup and hope she may go ok for bit of fun .She gets out ok but has to have mind on job.

Cheers people

A couple for Sale tomorrow...

Race 6, no.4: Mythique

5th at Sandown last start is a good for line for this. You will have the benefit of Australia's leading jockey/trainer combination - Luke Nolen and Peter Moody. $3 is the price I would want before betting.

Race 7, no.4: Hedkandi

Last start beat Oamaru Storm at Moonee Valley, who subsequently went on to record wins at Moonee Valley and then Flemington on Saturday. In form rider Peter Mertens is on board. Likely to start very short.

Race 8, no.3: Last start second to Makybe Diva's half sister Valkyrie Diva in Mornington Class 1. Goes down 1.5 Kg on that performance. Peter Mertens again rides.

Best of luck with those ones.

Doomben Cup wrap up

Perlin saluted for us, and if you added Platinum Scissors and Natural Blitz (there was no rain) to your multiples you would have had a very good result.

Mr. Murphy was once again second, the weight telling in the end, despite getting the perfect run thanks to Noel Callow.

One from Sydney to follow next time - Hennessy Waltz. Got blocked for a run in the straight but still flashed home to grab second. We will be on her next time. Also on Sydney, nice to see an old fashioned plunge on Cashout - from 120-1 into 40-1. The horse was gelded since his last start. On that point, if there is a gear change more significant than gelding I would like to hear about it - such information should be reported to punters so they can be fully informed on what they are betting on. Kingston Town ran about 10 lengths last on debut, was gelded, and came back to be one of the true greats of the Australian turf, so that is the sort of impact that it can make.

I didn't mention the race yesterday, and it is very easy to be wise after the fact, but Eremein stepping up 620m was always going to be a liability, and he duly got done. The old saying 'odds on look on' is worth following more often than not.

Saturday 28/5

A poor Doomben Cup field nevertheless represents a decent betting opportunity.

This is one of the poorer Doomben Cup fields in recent years, considering the calibre of some of the horses who have won this race. Nevertheless, there is still an opportunity for a win.

Perlin had excuses when going down in the PM's Cup on the Gold Coast, as I explained the weekend before last. Having some more time to get acclimatised, and after having an opportunity to get used to the clockwise way of going, I think he should improve considerably, and the $3.50 on Sportsbet looks about right.

Platinum Scissors has come back well since failing to 'fire' at stud, and beat Roman Arch very well last start. I would add Tickle to the multiples only if wet, and Pacific Dancer and Natural Blitz so long as there is NO rain around.

VRC Winter Championship Heat

I am a big believer that jockey's make a big difference, and after 5 seconds in a row, Mr. Murphy should be able to go one better thanks to the presence of outstanding rider Noel Callow. The form of the horse can't be faulted, it is just that he keeps getting pipped at the post. In these five seconds he has had apprentice riders on in all of them, and the presence of a top experienced rider should lift him enough to get him over the line.

McCarthy's Bar and Butten Shaw for the multiples.

Racing News

A few very handy horses have been retired just recently.

Regimental Gal (a daughter of top sprinter General Nediym) won the 2004 Lightning Stakes and Australia Stakes, both Group One. Overall she had 17 starts for seven wins and $1.61 million in prizemoney. She will be sold at the Magic Millions broodmare sale next month.

Star of Florida was never quite able to crack it at Group One level, mainly due to the fact that there were no G1 races at that distance apart from down the Flemington straight. As good a horse over the kilometre as you will see, he broke the 1000m track record at Warwick Farm, and the 1010m and 1110m track records at Doomben, not to mention being the world record holder for 800m, which he set at Dalby. Both of his victories at Group 2 level came at the Challenge Stakes at Warwick Farm. He is set for a nice retirement in the dressage and show jumping circuit.

Special Harmony utterly dominated the three year old fillies in the 2003/04 season, bolting in both the Thousand Guineas and VRC Derby, and racking five Group wins in early 2004, before striking rain affected ground in the AJC Derby where she came sixth (and good on connections for having the courage to take on the boys). Unfortunately she was never able to recapture the form of that year subsequently, although she put in a fine run to come fourth in this years Newmarket. She already has a date with Encosta De Lago lined up.

In other news, the MRC will change the distance of the Futurity Stakes from 1400m to 1600m to become part of the Asian Mile Challenge - a good move, seeing as there is little need for Caulfield to have two 1400m WFA races in Autumn. Hopefully it will attract some top class foreign runners down here, but I'm not holding my breath.

Not a great deal today but the one at Shepparton will go very close quite a smart horse when strikes form.
Marybourgh.
2/4 Kodaikanal. didnt do much at first start and was unwanted in betting but had trialed ok prior to that and may show some improvement here.
Shepparton
7/5 Tealsby karita.Form is ok and has trialed well since last run should be ready to find best and that is good enough to win this.

System explanation

Will just answer a couple of the comments which have came in before i post todays tips.

My system is based purely on trial results which i now get off harness.org.au or sent direct to me.
I do put some Harold park up but do have trouble accessing the trial results.Basically the only ones i get are Newcastle and some from Penrith and T.amworth.
Luv2bet yes you could use the system for local trots if you can get the trial results. As a rule a horse has to run better than 2.4 mile rate at the trials to qualify but that is flexible depending on how i rate the track.Keep the comments and questions coming.

Doomben 10,000 result

Red Oog didn't go round another horse and got up to win paying $18. Our Egyptian Raine clearly has some kind of problem, because she simply refuses to go past them. Shamekha was a bit of a disappointment after having a pretty good run.

1 - Red Oog
2 - Our Egyptian Raine
3 - Takeover Target

I hope everyone loaded up on Lord Volksraad for the place!

Staking plan

Asked by a visitor what staking plan i use when i publish our monthly results.
Very simply i have $1 each way on all selections or $2 win if odds on when placing bet.
I personally have other bets for more than my staking plan for eg i liked the winner at the Valley on friday nght so had $10 each way twice. This will show up on my monthly summary as $1 each way.
Hope this explains it for you.
Thanks for the feedback.

Doomben 10,000

One of the toughest races I've seen in a while...

This race is going to be an absolute belter, and the possibility of a wet track (dead at best) will just add another complication to it. Several top line G1 winners such as Shamekha, Takeover Target, Patezza, Regimantal Gal, Yell, and Our Egyptian Raine headline this years event. Where to start?

Well, firstly we need to cross some out. John Hawkes said during the week that 10 of the horses in this race have no chance, and I think that his point has some validity. However, there are 150 years of Australian racing history which think differently. Certainly Osca Warrior, Consular (and I'm a fan of both of them), Proudly Agro, Show Biz Kid, Top Marc, Legally Bay, Rich Megadale, and the two emergencies are going to have it up against them.

Patezza - Needless to say this horse has been a revelation this spring, winning the G1 Doncaster Handicap. Has drawn out wide (15) but as a horse who gets back that shouldn't affect him too much (he had barrier 16 in the Doncaster. Huge show with genuine pace up front. Something of a concern after eight weeks out, but Guy Walter knows what he is doing.

Yell - On his day a top class horse so you wouldn't want to rule him out completely, but his last start was just too bad to be dismissed, so I won't be having him.

Takeover Target - With a bit of pace up front (from Osca Warrior, Regi Gal, and Wager) will hopefully be able to get a nice sit behind the leader which from barrier seven shouldn't be too hard. Has enough class here, but I think that $4 is prohibitively short.

St. Basil - Heartbreak horse who always charges home but never quite gets there. I can't see any significant factor to suggest today will be any exception.

Red Oog - Nice horse who may be able to get inside of them all from barrier one, but just seems to be a level below those he meets here.

Shamekha - Gai has done a brilliant job with this mare, setting her to win the T.J Smith first up over Alinghi and Fastnet Rock, and then backing up to win the All Aged Stakes. Just a genuine classy horse who should race forward of midfield, and with Australia's number one jockey Darren Beadman on board, has a hell of a lot going for her at $4.50. The one to beat in my opinion, especially with the sting out of the track, as she won both of those G1's on slow tracks (yes, the All Aged track was rated good, but they ran the last 600m in 38 seconds).

Regimental Gal - Returned very nicely last start to lead most of the way before fading for third in the BTC Cup, but the 1350m is a real stretch for this mare, and with a fair bit of pace up front, it is difficult to see her having the gas in the tank to hold them out. Only one start past 1200m and was beaten two lengths by Shamekha.

Our Egyptian Raine - Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to see this mare win a G1. God knows I have backed her in enough of them, but I won't be tomorrow. The sad fact is that she doesn't win races, and it is a terrible habit to get out of, and I can't see that happening today. From barrier three has to be some chance however, and you can always back her for the place, although that is what I did in last years Emirates Stakes, and guess what, she came fourth.

Only Words - Barrier 20 really casts her out of this one, and I think WFA is not ideal for her (yes, I know she has come second at WFA in her past two starts). Add in the fact she was quite disgraceful at her last start and I think she can be cast aside.

Sky Cuddle - They fluked a G1 with her, and should be incredibly grateful, not push their luck by persisting with her in races of the class she cannot win. If the track was to become seriously wet she would be a chance however.

Wager - Did very well last start, but that run was a total gutbuster for her, and I think she left her best out there a fortnight ago. You can never underestimate Gai however, so she is one of a number with a rough show.

This is a very tough race to pick, but I think if you went each way on Shamekha at $4.50, you have a very good chance of seeing your money again, and hopefully a bit more.

My top five:

1 - Shamekha
2 - Patezza
3 - Takeover Target
4 - Our Egyptian Raine
5 - St. Basil

Outsider: Yell (30-1)

With a field of 20 things could go any way, so I wouldn't be having the house on.

Other tips:

Melbourne

6/4 - Lord Volksraad - PLACE

8/5 - Nuts About Jugah - Bolted in up the bush last start, in an open race, which is a pretty good form line for this, and has been placed twice at the Valley before.

Just on last week quickly

Goodwood: I said I'd quit if Foreplay won - he came last by about 15 lengths. My tip, Ellicorsam was scratched.

SA Derby: Threedee, my tip, failed to repeat last weeks excellent effort and came a poorly 11th.

PM's Cup: I said not to back Perlin @ $1.90 - and I was right.

Hollindale: The debacle with the flight and the upset it would have caused Roman Arch would have been worth at least a long neck in my opinion. Nevertheless, he didn't win, and that is what matters - once again Gai has done a great job with Platinum Scissors.

Saturday 14/5

Big day of racing on the Gold Coast and over in Adelaide, with a number of very open and interesting races before us.

Goodwood Handicap:

As usual, this is an extremely open and interesting race.

Super Elegant is a grand old fighter, but the combination of the 59.5 Kg and the widest barrier is, I think, going to be too much for him to overcome here.

Speaking of grand old fighters, on his last run, you have to rate Bomber Bill a pretty good chance here, having held out a good portion of the field that contests here today, and also going down in weight since his win. Top heavyweight S. Arnold takes the mount, and he should be right in it, although again the barrier is a concern.

Titanic Jack and Great Is Great are handy enough on their day, but haven't been sufficiently convincing in recent times to warrant their inclusion in the top chances.

As is usual in Adelaide, we find a few horses nowhere near G1 standard: Youth, Zip Zip Aray, Via De Lago, Marwin Gold, Songs of Vienna, Segments - although I suppose that is what handicap racing is about.

Foreplay is favourite, which is quite ridiculous, for a horse who has done absolutely nothing expect come third in a Newmarket in front of runners who would be more at home in a Class 6 at Sandown on a Wednesday than Australia's premier sprint. He was beaten the best part of two lengths by Our Quivira last start for crying out loud! I will say this - if Foreplay wins, I will quit writing for this site. He reminds me a lot of another Danehill 3YO, Danehill Express - all sizzle, no steak.

My selection is Ellicorsam, as questionable as we all know Perth form is, but she has quite a few runs on the board. Last year as a 3YO she came seventh, not a bad effort. Since then she has won four from five in a very convincing manner, two of them at group level. She is a front runner, and whilst a 20 horse race is unlikely to ever be run at a sluggish race, there is nothing which I would expect to go too crazy out in front. Super hot rider Dwayne Dunn gets the ride, and with only 52.5 Kg she is sure to give a good show.

General Bayton is a very consistent galloper and is well worth including in the multiples.

1 - Ellicorsam
2 - Bomber Bill
3 - General Bayton

Longshot: Solar Antiquity

SA Derby

In the previous race I made mention of overhyped and overrated Danehill three year olds - here is another to add to the list, the favourite for this race, Lions Gate. At least this horse has put in one impressive performance, in (I think it is called) the Geelong Classic. That was a long time ago however, and there has not been much of note from him since. There is some talent however, and he may show up.

Heavenly Pun has established himself as superior to most of the 3YO's who have come over from Melbourne since Saturday, but was beaten by Threedee on Saturday. As such, I'm going with pure logical formlines, and selecting Threedee to win from Heavenly Pun.

1 - Threedee
2 - Heavenly Pun
3 - Lions Gate

Prime Ministers Cup

I can't articulate this any better than what this man here has done:

http://www.justracing.com.au/index.php?news_page=1&artid=1491&catid=52

I think Perlin will win, but backing him at $1.90 is just silly. So, I'd have Tickle each way at about $7, coming off the back of a nice win at G3 level just start, and with a good record in the wet. Toulouse Lautrec will be better due to the wet track.

1 - Perlin
2 - Tickle
3 - Toulouse Lautrec

Longshot - Waltermitty (won four and placed seven times from nine on wet tracks)

Hollindale Stakes:

Cannot possibly see anything beating Roman Arch on a slow track. Special of the day, as long as he pulls up ok from his last minute flight. Special Harmony if the track dries out a bit.

Best of luck as always punters.
