Sunday tip and Wednesday
As you will be know doubt aware i am off on my Birdsville bash so this will be the last post for a week or so.As it turns out will be fairly quiet period still with only one today and two on Wednesday, and one of these is backing up from today.
Bendigo sunday.
1/8 Illawong handsome. Draw is against as will come from outside front in previous start when eased back it raced roughly so probably no alternative but to go forward and try to lead if gets easy lead will win but big IF.The same horse is in Wangaratta racing at Shepparton on Wednesday and has drawn 3 in race 8 so may save it for then.
Bathurst wednesday.
6/7
Towner Queen Checked and broke last start has trialed well here since so big chance.
CHEERS AND GOOD PUNTING WILL RESUME ON THE7/9/05

Saturday Results
Caulfield
Firstly, I agree with Lloyd Williams. The track is a disgrace.
Race 4: Brannigan (2nd, $1.30)
Second just to Classiconi. Good run and will pay to follow, track bias probably hurt.
Race 5: Regal Roller (3rd, NTD)
Went around ok, another probably caught out by the track bias. Don't give up on him yet.
Race 6: Readyforcatherine (midfield, not certain)
A little disappointing, will look for something easier for her. Winner Danerich was very impressive.
Race 7: Honest Politician (1st, $8.20, $2.50)
The race went exactly the way I said it would, Honest Politician settling forward, and Flowerdrum unable to run her down. Paid $8.20 the win which was good.
Rosehill
Race 4: Our Highlander (2nd, $1.60)
Just beaten in a photo by the smart Snippetson.
Race 5: Zumanity (4th)
About a neck out of third. Winner Railings is very smart and will pay to follow.
Race 6: Red Oog (1st, $3.60, $1.40)
Won paying $3.60, in a blanket finish. Not sure what he is being set for, but a very smart horse.
Race 7: Pendragon (3rd, $2.30)
Made excellent ground to finish third. Will get a trip, definite Spring Champion horse. Winner Paratroopers is very smart. Oh yeah, Darren Beadman is a genius.
Race 8: Virage De Fortune (Midfield, unplaced)
They set an outrageous pace in front, allowing three cats to come on from the back and win. She was three wide the journey. Make no mistake, this is a smart filly, just a combination of factors worked against her today. All things considered she put in a good run.
So, overall:
9 Tips
2 wins, paying $3.50 and $8.20 respectively.
4 other placings.
If you had $1 e/w on all of them: $2.90 ahead.
Not bad but not brilliant.

Saturday 27/8
Interesting day's racing before us, highlights being the Golden Rose in Sydney, and the Memsie Stakes in Melbourne.
Melbourne tips now posted!
Sydney:
Race 4, no.3: Our Highlander
Has been in great form lately, last start winning the $100K Winter Championship final. Back in distance but has been freshened up. Jymcarew is another smart type but couldn't have him on his last run.
Race 5, no.5: Zumanity
Smart staying mare who should appreciate rise in distance. Good run last start in aforementioned Winter Championship.
Race 6, no.2: Red Oog
Group 1 winning galloper, who has won four from five first up! Meets some smart performers here, but nothing he can't handle. Watch Binding as he is a potential star of the Spring if he has come back in best form. Will most likely find this too short, but should be running on.
Race 7, no. 7: Pendragon
Has been screaming out for the 1400 trip. Has three seconds from three starts, which isn't a good habit, but I think he will break the mould here. Really open race with a lot of untested form. Bear in mind that this race usually, last year in particular, makes for very good form lines.
Race 8, no.1: Virage De Fortune
I love this filly, and I was impressed by her performance in the QTC Sires Produce as I have been by any 2YO I have seen from last season. BUT. There are two major factors which will make this race tough for her. Firstly, she has drawn barrier 14, which isn't as awful as it sounds owing to the nature of the Rosehill track but could be better. Secondly, carrying 56.5 (topweight) against older mares is going to be a difficult proposition. I think she is good enough to do it, but she isn't without some risk, and you may well want to wait for the right conditions for her.
Melbourne
Race 4, no.1: Brannigan
This horse resumes after the best part of 10 months off. Last Flemington carnival he went down to Australia's best sprinter Fastnet Rock by just half a length down the straight on Derby Day. Followed up with a Sandown Listed race win at WFA. Classy type who loves wet and should be too strong.
Race 5, no.2: Regal Roller
I couldn't for the life of me say what happened to this horse last start, but seeing as he has pulled up fine I think he can be forgiven one bad run. Outstanding Caulfield horse, and if right, will win easily.
I wouldn't touch Makybe Diva with yours. First up record - 6:0-0-0. Correct, she has never run a place first up, and in this small field that is possible, but she sure won't be winning. I want to see how she has pulled up from that Japan adventure - travel has had a crippling effect on some horses over the years.
Race 6, no.6: Readyforcatherine
Make no mistake, this is one smart filly. Showed good form in the later Autumn 2YO races, and in a wide open race represents good value - currently $16 on Sportsbet.
Race 7, no.7: Honest Politician
This very consistent mare has found an ideal race to collect her black type. Whilst, with the exception of Hunter Hermitage, there is likely to be little pace on, I can see this mare taking a sit midfield, and getting too far away for the likes of Flowerdrum, Emerald Jack, and Milkshake to catch her.

Friday Yarra valley and harold park Thursday results
Repeat the dose. Finished 4th not a bad run but no help to us.
Petites badman. Was backed as if a certainy and driven same way finished well back.
Yarra valley
7/12 The piper. Has been in the market a few times and capable of upsetting this field.
Harold park.
7/1 Nero pooli. This horse has been good to us but this is biggest test follow up.

Hi to anybody on here who ever looks at my greyhound selections,
I apologise for their casual appearance at times lately.
But for a short period starting today ( probably till end of sept )
I will not be posting any more selections as my wife has been diagnosed with further cancer problems.
I apologise for any body who I may inconvenience by my non selections ( if anyone ) but i must get my priorities right.

Countdown to Birdsville
Well into countdown mode now so will post a few updates for those of you who have always wanted to travel to this Aussie adventure.
Birdsville is approx 1750 ks west of Brisbane close to the Sa border and has a normal population in the whole district of 103, this swells to between 4000 to 6000 for the annual first Saturday in September race meeting.
People get there by various means including Planes busiest airport in Australia on the Saturday morning, Cars mainly 4wds and like us Coaches. For the first time and this is my eleventh trip we have a sold out trip .On my trip we have people flying in from Victoria one from Perth and two Kiwis of all age groups.
The most common asked question to me is what is there to do out there, it has the most fascinating museum that i have seen a boxing tent is operation plus street stalls and of course the world famous Birdsville hotel.Entertainment at night from bands at the pub with a Friday dinner dance and Saturday ball and Friday and Saturday race meeetings the cup itself is worth $25000 this year and attracts a good field .
Anyone with any questions feel free to ask and i will answer them on my return also will attempt to post some photos

Wednesday Ballarat
Still a quiet period but we are getting our share of winners so not complaining .Have a couple tomorrow night at Ballarat and both should be hard to beat.
6/3 Im Handsome. Big run last start when caught wide all the way but still hit the front in straight before weakening nicely drawn here and go close.
7/12 Unreachable galloped out last start hence the outside draw still not beaten far and also good chance.
Letting you all know i will be away from next Monday for about 10 days will post in advance the horses to follow in my absence.Yearly trip to the Birdsvlle races.

Weekend results
Have been away so a bit late posting but we had a good night saturday with three winners from our four tips with a late scratching of Murdoch raider.
Storm warning won again continuing its good form and a nice price for us in the same race Illawong Handsome finished 4th at odds on so best result for us.
Bygone era also saluted but was odds on.
Petites badman also won after being well backed.
On Sunay Megagirl finished unplaced and galloping twice in race still gave a big show but to erratic.

Add on Shepparton
Missed one and is probably our best for the night although confident of a collect in the 2nd
6/3 bygone era .Form good and trialed well here last week will go close from draw.
In the 2nd race 2 Illawong Handsome and the 5 Storm maker both will go forward and maybe 9Murdoch raider can have last shot at them .I will be boxing up the tri and any twos. My leaning is to the 2 but the 5 will be better value and 9 worth something each way (work that out)

Geelong Thursday
Race 2, no. 12: Colonel Mustard
Highly regarded as an early season 2YO, then failed at Group 2 level in Adelaide. Trained by Lee Freedman, and doesn't meet much of quality here. Hopefully has come back in good order, and should be competitive here.
Race 3, no.16: Tears of Argentina
Umatilla filly trained by Mick Price, and to be ridden by our favourite Jockey Noel Callow. Umatilla's get better with more distance, so expect her to be compeitive here. Was competitive in a 1200m maiden here last start beating the fourth place getter by five lengths.
Race 5, no.3: Safari Sunbeam
This filly, by Genuine, won her debut start at a Sandown midweek meeting a couple of weeks ago. Third placegetter from that race has subsequently won at Wangaratta convincingly. This field has some smart types, but I think she will be too strong again. Another Mick Price / Noel Callow combination. Considering they have a 50% strike rate when teaming together (in the 12 months to August 5) why wouldn't you back them?
Best of luck punters,
Tim.

Anna's Choice made good ground to finish fourth, and will certainly pay to follow.
Gunfire Messiah was a late scratching.
In today's main news, Written Bloodstock Syndicate have withdrawn their horses from Sydney trainer Graeme Begg. Horses trained by Begg for Written Bloodstock include multiple Group One placegetter Our Egyptian Raine, and exciting Colt Written Tycoon.
Begg has not been given a reason for the withdrawal, and according to Begg Victorian trainer Robert Smerdon has had the horses he trains for the syndicate withdrawn as well.
More news on this interesting development in coming days.

Really quiet period right now but do have one at each venue tomorrow thursday.
Charlton
2/10 Rock the boat was dissapointing last week here but wide draw wouldnt have helped 2nd row may make it easier to get position was favorite last week so follow up.
Cranbourne.
8/5 Arivee. Hasnt come up this time in but did win trial at Ballarat in fastest time of day and on best form would win chance in small field.
Newcastle
6/3 Nero pooli. I have a wrap on this horse and won last start under difficulties (pulled a flat tyre) but still won easily big chance again.

TAB Sportsbet have released their Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup markets.
The Caulfield Cup sees VRC and WA Derby winner Plastered at $8, followed by Dizelle at $9. Hollow Bullet, She's Justa Tad, are at $15 , Perlin at $16, Xcellent (who I think is a lot better than his AJC Derby run) at $26, and 2003 winner Mummify at $31.
The Cox Plate has Makybe Diva at the ridiculous price of $5, Grand Armee at $7.50, with international gallopers Greys Inn at $13, and Vengeance of Rain (if it turns up, it is the one to beat) at $17.
The Melbourne Cup has Plastered at $7, Makybe Diva at $8, Dizelle at $10, Vinnie Roe at $11, and the foreign gallopers Disitnction at $13 and Westerner at $21.
Tomorrow's tips:
Warwick Farm
Race 6, no.2: Gunfire Messiah
The raps on this one were huge before he bowed his tendon. If he has got over the injury, he will win. If not, he won't. Definitely a risk, but the rewards are there.
Moonee Valley
Race 3, no.7: Anna's Choice
Daughter of 2001 Oakleigh Plate winner Miss Kournikova, by super hot sire Redoute's Choice. Cannot find any trial form, but one to watch purely based on the breeding.
So definitely no guarantees there, but certainly a bit of potential.

Very ordianary day knightablazing got to far back from draw ran a fair race to finish 5th in fast time so maybe worth another chance but 2nd row draws make it hard.
Jolly Jeparit was heavily backed and led taken on again in fast race and weakened. The run of the race to me was Im handsome a horse i tipped last start 3 wide all the way and got to the front only to weaken but it had, to next start this horse.

Results 13/7
Premiere Stakes:
Tip - Dance Hero. Winner - Shania Dane.
Dance Hero was extremely courageous going down to Shania Dane, doing it hard all the way after being taken on by Spark of Life early. Shania Dane just got them late. Well done to Rod Quinn - Two group race victories in two weeks.
Lifestyle Stakes:
Tip - Perfectly Ready. Winner - Danerich.
Perfectly Ready missed the start and never really looked to be in it. Danerich was the beneficiary of an outstanding ride from our man Noel Callow.
Crockett Stakes:
Tip - Freestyle. Winner - Jadescent.
Freestyle tried to do it all the way but got run down in the straight to finish third. Brave effort - winner looks a smart type.
McEwen Trophy
Tip - Strikeline. Winner - Strikeline.
Winner did really well. Sat one wide the trip, and kicked clear in the straight. Convincing win. Truly Wicked will go on to better things, and Titanic Jack seems to have come back well.
So everall.
4 tips: 1 first, 1 second, 1 third, 1 fourth.
Not too bad, but we can do better.
Noel watch:
The captain had four rides today:
2 unplaced
1 winner, paying $4.40 and $1.70.
1 second paying $1.60.
Out: $8.00
In: $7.70.
First time the Noel strategy fails to show a profit. But not even the Captain can get a mug like to Holding to be competitive at G3 level.
Next Saturday features the Regal Roller benefit in the Liston Stakes, the Cockram Stakes for the mares, plus the Vain and Quezette Stakes for the 3YO colts/geldings and fillies respectively.

Add on Bendigo
1/10 Atomic fallout. This stable does not race bad horses although not best driver around but chance from awkward draw.

Bendigo and newcastle saturday
Bendigo
3/7 genghis Yankee. Form tapered off at the end of last prep, prior had good form and has trialed well at Geelong for this chance.
4/6 Repeat the dose. Improved last start here and worth another try.
6/10 Alderbaran star. Won nicely in small field last start and good chance from bad draw.
Newcastle
Only the one and not sure if it will be any value to us.
7/1 big bad albert. We were on at first start and think it might be quite smart so follow up here but as i said may not be much value.
Mildura result. Megagirl finished 4th but really needs it week to win one.

Saturday 13/8
Tips for tomorrow's big day of racing...
Sydney:
Premiere Stakes - Dance Hero
Too brilliant for them last time, and save for a bog track, which would bring Spark of Life into it, I expect the same result here.
Melbourne:
Lifestyle Stakes - Perfectly Ready
Trialled superbly on Monday, and will be suited by the wet track, where as Undoubtedly will not. Don't rate Siednazar personally. Danerich for the quinella.
Crockett Stakes - Freestle
Has won four from five career starts, and as the name suggests, should be a swimmer as she is by Snippets from a Star Way mare. Not too harshly treated at the weights either. Langness could pinch it if her brain is in order and it isn't too wet, and you can throw in Jadescent for the quinella as well.
McEwen Trophy - Strikeline
Can't have Bomber Bill with a wet track, and the Mayfield-Smith mare Strikeline is a very classy mare, and has a great record at the track, the distance, and in the wet. What more could you want? Our Quivara is second favourite for crying out loud.
In other news today Grand Armee trialled terribly and his Spring campaign is in doubt.
Best of luck punters.
Tim.

Ballarat result and mildura tip
Strassman was unplaced after leading not much good so will sack it.
Mildura. Only the one and only rough chance .Would win on bestr form but awhile since it has shown that.
3/2 Megagirl draw is a help but as i said take on trust.

In other racing news:
* John Hawkes has announced the closure of his Adelaide stable. Hawkes started out in Adelaide back in the early 1970's.
* To celebrate the opening of their fixed odds market for the Melbourne Cup on Saturday, for this weekend Makybe Diva and Vinnie Roe will be offered at odds of $21. May be worth having a long range saver on the Diva.
* The bitter war between TVN and Sky has continued, with Sky obtaining a Supreme Court injunction preventing TVN from being broadcast on Austar.
* This Saturday will mark the return of the famous Hayes name to the track, as Lindsay Park horses will from now on carry the name of Head Trainer David Hayes.
* Brian Blackmore today retired from race calling after 50 years behind the binoculars.
* Multiple Group One winner Lonhro has his first foal on the ground. The filly is out of 2000 VRC Oaks winner Lovelorn. Naturally, Lonhro has served the best of the Ingham's mares to try and get early momentum for his stud career.

This is quite a smart horse on his day. Hasn't a brilliant first up record, but will go back from outside barrier and will hopefully be charging home.

Racing news and views
I didn't exactly cover myself in glory on Saturday...
Regal Roller has proved himself to be a genuine top line galloper with a strong win over the gallant Super Elegant on Saturday. Three wide all the way, the Roller knuckled down over the last 100 to win by a neck, in defiance of his poor first up record.
Media was excellent in winning the San Domenico - no doubt she will be a force to be reckoned with in the 'Princess Series' for 3YO filles. Mnemosyne, my tip, ran on to the back of Stratum in the straight which cost her severely - she flashed home though, and will be a force to be reckoned with in the Princess Series as well. I thought the well backed favourite Snitzel was underwhelming.
Nominations for Saturday's big races came out today. Can't you taste the Spring feeling in the air?
Moonee Valley, Saturday
Mitchell McKenzie Stakes, $100,000 - Listed SWP. 3YO Colts and Geldings. 1000m.
1 DANGER LOOMS John McArdle
2 FEROCITY Danny O'Brien
3 LANGARZA Colin Little
4 PERFECTLY READY Mick Price
5 SAIN VESUVIO David Hayes
6 SEIDNAZAR Peter G Moody
7 UNDOUBTEDLY Mark Kavanagh
Undoubtedly won the Blue Diamond, Danger Looms the VRC Sires Produce, Perfectly Ready was 3rd in the Blue Diamond (and was the quickest winner at today's Cranbourne trials), and Ferocity the Adelaide Magic Millions 2YO race.
William Crockett Stakes, $100,000 - Listed SWP. 3YO Fillies. 1000m.
1 ACCELERATION Ricky Maund
2 DINKUM STAR Don Magick
3 FREESTYLE Phillip Stokes
4 INSEPARABLE Robbie Laing
5 JADESCENT (NZ) Lee Hope
6 JESTAWINNA John Symons
7 JUNCTURE Graeme Rogerson
8 LANGNESS David Hayes
9 LEVELLER Graeme Rogerson
10 LUMINARY Graeme Rogerson
11 MEGADEAL Danny O'Brien
12 MOON FEVER Mick Price
13 ON THE LOOSE John Symons
14 PERSONAL ENSIGN Mick Price
15 TESTA REALE Tony Vasil
16 TRUE DOUBT Robert Smerdon
Freestyle has won four from five in fine fashion, including one at Group 2 level, Langness 'won' the aborted Blue Diamond preview (and was brilliant in doing so) but has since suffered from unexplained poor performance syndrome (I wish I was joking, it actually exists) except for a Listed race win in Adelaide (which is more or less the equivalent of a Moe maiden), Leveller is a talented Group winning filly owned by the canny Lloyd Williams, Personal Ensign is a Rubiton filly who has won twice in Saturday company, and Testa Reale was fifth in the Blue Diamond.
So as you can see, even with some attrition, it is sure to be an interesting race.
McEwen Trophy, $151,000 - Group III. 3YO & up WFA. 1000m.
1 BOMBER BILL Robert Smerdon
2 EDGETON Brendon Hearps
3 HOLDING Bill Mitchell
4 OUR QUIVIRA (NZ) Peter G Moody
5 PERLIN (NZ) Graeme Rogerson
6 RENEWABLE (NZ) Graeme Rogerson
7 STRATEGEE GEE David Brideoake
8 STRIKELINE Brian Mayfield-Smith
9 TARN PRINCESS Robbie Griffiths
10 TITANIC JACK Tom Hughes
11 TRULY WICKED Brian Mayfield-Smith
Bomber Bill looks almost a good thing so long as the track is dry (I know it is Monday, but listen to my reasoning). Edgeton, Holding, Our Quivara, Strategee Gee and Tarn Princess are way outclassed, Perlin and Renewable will find the 1000m too short. Strikeline, Truly Wicked and Titanic Jack are the three others, but Titanic Jack hasn't been at his best for 18 months. Strikeline is a live chance. Truly Wicked is another good chance - but I would fancy old Bomber to beat them both.
Rosehill, Saturday
Premiere Stakes, $140,000 - Group 2. 3YO & up WFA. 1200m.
1 CARRY ON CUTIE Graeme Rogerson
2 COURT'S IN SESSION Guy Walter
3 DANCE HERO Gai Waterhouse
4 IKE'S DREAM John Hawkes
5 SHANIA DANE John Hawkes
6 SNIPPETSON Guy Walter
7 SPARK OF LIFE Allan Denham
Only a small field but the quality is outstanding - five of the seven are Group 1 winners. Dance Hero won the 2YO triple crown (Golden Slipper, AJC Sires Produce, Champagne Stakes) and was a brilliant last start winner of the Missile, Carry On Cutie won the G1 Champagne Stakes, Ike's Dream won the G1 Coolmore Classic last Autumn, Shania Dane has won at Group 2 and 3 level, Spark of Life, who has won 9/15 career starts, including the G1 AJC Galaxy and Manikato Stakes, Court's In Session is the bold front runner who won the George Ryder and ran a courageous third in the Doncaster - he won over 1200m last preparation beating Our Egyptian Raine and Grand Armee, so who knows what he could do here?
So as you can see, not a bad field.
Last week nominations for the big Spring races came out:
Caulfield Guineas: http://www.ozracing.net.au/cgi-bin/rsb/public/format_wgt_rating.cgi/0810CAUL.DGN?State=V
Thousand Guineas: http://www.ozracing.net.au/cgi-bin/rsb/public/format_wgt_rating.cgi/1210CAUL.DGN?State=V
Caulfield Cup: http://www.ozracing.net.au/cgi-bin/rsb/public/format_wgt_rating.cgi/1510CAUL.DGN?State=V
Cox Plate: http://www.ozracing.net.au/cgi-bin/rsb/public/format_wgt_rating.cgi/2210M_V_.DGN?State=V
VRC Derby: http://www.ozracing.net.au/cgi-bin/rsb/public/format_wgt_rating.cgi/2910FLEM.DGN?State=V
Melbourne Cup: http://www.ozracing.net.au/cgi-bin/rsb/public/format_wgt_rating.cgi/0111FLEM.DGN?State=V
VRC Oaks: http://www.ozracing.net.au/cgi-bin/rsb/public/format_wgt_rating.cgi/0311FLEM.DGN?State=V
Nothing earth shattering there, but always interesting to have a look.
A new feature I hope to add to this column, which I plan to make twice weekely, is the Captain Callow section - in this we will follow the fortunes of Australia's #2 jockey - the magnificent Noel Callow.
Last Saturday the Captain had 5 rides:
Race 1: Automaton. 2nd paying $2.80.
Race 2: Pinezerio. 1st paying $6.00 and $2.10.
Race 5: Little Dozer. Unplaced (the thing is a cat though)
Race 6: Le Zagaletta. 3rd, but NTD.
Race 7: Schumpeter. Unplaced (makes Little Dozer look like a Ferrari - the start before he was beaten 16 lengths at Cranbourne)
So overall, 5 rides, for 1 win, 1 second, and 1 third. Return on $1 each way on all mounts - $10.90 - 9% profit! Find me a banker who can get you that return!
Until next time, best of luck punters!
Tim.

Bletchingly & San Domenico Stakes
Spring is just around the corner, and many of Australia's best juveniles will be making their comeback in the San Domenico Stakes at Rosehill. Down in Melbourne, the Beltchingly Stakes sees a number of evergreen sprinters battling it out, as well as the return of a couple of other genuine Group 1 gallopers.
San Domenico Stakes
This is always a very tough race to call. Many of these will have improved from their 2YO season in leaps and bounds, whereas others will never manage to fulfil the potential they once displayed.
Snitzel is the $2.80 favourite for this race, a price which just seems way too short for my liking. Although on some occasions he has shown exceptional ability, when the pressure has been on in the really big races (Magic Millions and Slipper) he has failed. That said he has evidently trialled well. Corey Brown rides the colt.
Menmosyne is the horse who has really taken my fancy for this one. She has only managed to win the one start, but has shown exceptional ability on a number of occasions, most notably the Slipper where she missed the start yet still charged home to finish third. She then came second in the Sires Produce to the exceptional Fashions Afield. There is something about this filly that reminds a little bit of Alinghi - maybe because they are both by Encosta De Lago? Either way, with only 52 Kg on her back, she looks every chance to me, and at $4.40 is well worth looking at each way.
Golden Slipper winner Stratum and the smart filly Media also cannot be discounted.
In summary, I would back Mnemosyne each way.
Bletchingly Stakes
Why there is a race at Caulfield named after this horse I don't really know. After all, his only Group victory came in the AJC Galaxy, and I'm not sure he even won anything at Caulfield. Having said that he was an exceptional sire, being the sire of, amongst others, the champion Kingston Town.
First let's look at Regal Roller. This horse is a renowned Caulfield specialist, winning the Liston, the Dubai Racing Club, and the Toorak Handicap there last Spring, as well as the Futurity in the Autumn. Understandably, people want to be on the bandwagon this Spring. In any case, this isn't the race for him. Why?
Two reasons. Firstly, he has a poor first up record. He has won one race from six first up - a $30,000 Open Handicap at Bendigo, with 49 Kg on his back. That is not a misprint. 49 kg.
Secondly, he has a poor record at the distance of 1200m. Indeed, from five starts he has yet to win over the distance. Further, the only win below 1200m was the aforementioned Open Handicap at Bendigo!
As good as he is, looking at those facts you couldn't possibly touch him tomorrow.
Let me write a few more off: Truly Wicked simply does not have the class. How Ghost Party got into the race I have no idea. Roman Arch is a smart galloper - but not here. The track will be too wet for Bomber Bill - likely scratching. Dilly Dally is already out. Hollow Bullet is untested outside three year old filles class - and there is a hell of a difference between the race she won first up year on Australia Day and what she faces here. Nevertheless she is a class galloper and must be rated some chance.
Wildly is not a great horse. However, you have to take account of his heavy track record - three starts for two wins and a second. He also loves Caulfield. Therefore, he has to be in our multiples.
Le Zagaletta seems to come out for this race every year. If any trainer can set a 10 year old horse for one race, year in, year out, it is Lee Freedman. Captain Callow takes the mount, so there is definitely some hope - again, one for out multiples.
This brings us to a grand old campaigner of the turf. Super Elegant has been a top horse, year in, year out, and seems to have almost gotten better with age. His heavy track record is superb, he loves Caulfield, and he comfortably beat many of the same horses here last start. His second up record is outstanding as well. From barrier four, I can't see anything beating him.
So in summary, I would have something on Super Elegant to win, and take the trifecta, Super Elegant to win from Wildly, La Zagaletta, and Hollow Bullet.
Best of luck punters.
