Results Marybourgh cup day

Well a frustrating day as all our tips finished second including the one i liked in the cup.
Did manage to get the quinella in the sixth race and Robric jonboy led all the way and just caught by a outsider in Tromos we also had the 3rd horse.
Good luck tomorrow in the cup go Eye popper.

Melbourne Cup

Warning: No punches pulled.

The first thing I like to do when assessing cup form, is write off some horses who cannot possibly win or place.

That would be the following:

Franklins Gardens
Kindjhal
Dizelle
Vouvray
On A Jeune
Umbula
Bazelle
Envoy
Rizon
Strasbourg
Kamssky
Greys Inn
Hugs Dancer
Vinnie Roe
Portland Singa

These horses are either not good enough, or in bad form. Take my word for it.

The remaining 9, we need to be divided into the serious winning chances, and the possibilities.

Possibilities:

Distinction - Sixth in last year's Cup, after something of a torrid run. Last start in the Doncaster Cup was appalling, although you have to assume that was an aberration, otherwise connections would not have incurred the cost of sending him out here. Form prior to that was top notch.

Xcellent - Potential megastar who hasn't delivered as yet. Unorthodox campaign, but if the horses from Europe can win the cup first up, no reason he can't win with slightly more miles in the legs. Not without a hope, and don't leave him out of your multiples.

Demerger - Will run a strong 3200m, as won Adelaide Cup by seven lengths in Autumn. Been a touch disappointing lately, 10th last start in Caulfield Cup, but has been set for this all along.

Lachlan River - Fast finishing third in Mackinnon was too impressive to ignore. Form before that moderate. Should run a strong 3200m.

Serious chances:

Makybe Diva - What can you say, that hasn't already been said? Outstanding mare, not altogether badly weighted, custom made track courtesy of the VRC. Leave her out at your peril.

Eye Popper - Run of the race in the Caulfield Cup, went 3 or 4 wide most of the way and was done a neck. Beat Makybe home easily in Japan (don't believe the rubbish about the track being too hard). If I knew he was going to get a proper ride he would be almost a certainty.

Railings - Won the Caulfield Cup, and the jockey said he was only going to get better. Handicapper has got to him a bit, and if Eye Popper was ridden properly I couldn't see him beating that horse home, nevertheless, he may well not be ridden properly! Strong chance and will be in it for a long time. Jockey MUST go forward, and I'm pretty certain will.

Leica Falcon - Most has been said already, bush horse with a huge sprint. He ran the final 400m faster than any other runner on Caulfield Cup DAY. Huge show with 59 Kg.

Mr Celebrity - Looks a truly outstanding racehorse in the making. Forget the result of the Saab on Saturday, the run was huge, making up heaps of ground off a farcical pace. With only 49.5Kg on his back, will be running on hard.

My suggested bet is to box up my chances, (numbers 1,3,6,7,8,11,13,22,23, $18 for 50c), in a quinella and have something each way on Eye Popper.

Other tips for tomorrow:

Race 1, no.3: Follow The Till

Won a maiden at Ballarat by seven lengths so obviously has some ability. Against mostly unraced lot here.

Race 2, no.13: Sun Song

Fourth in smart mares race in Gosford last start. Astute stable. Well weighted.

Race 3, no.4: Douro Valley

Dour staying type with just that hint of class. Beautifully drawn, hard to see anything beating him here. Should win an Adelaide/Brisbane/Sydney Cup one day.

Race 4, no.13: Pin Up

Magnificently bred, (half sister to Starcraft, Forum Floozie), but less impressive at first up run. Had excuses, and the 1400m plus the weight scale is well in her advantage. Each way.

Race 5, no.7: Langness

'Won' the Blue Diamond preview that was later deemed a non race. Was utterly brilliant in that performance. Been generally disappointing since, but David Hayes may well be the man to sort it out. Worth having a nibble at odds.

Race 6, no.4: Funlove

Won most impressively last start at Caulfield and no harder here. Excellent each way chance.

Race 8, no.3: Oamaru Storm

Super consistent horse who loves the track. Great winning strike rate and excellent each way value.

Race 9, no.10: Unabated

Consistent mare who is well weighted and has good record at the track. Each way. Very open race.

Race 10. no.4: El Zahia

Handy gelding who has won first up before. Should sprint well fresh. Nice barrier and S. Arnold on. Another very, very open race.

Best of luck punters.

Marybourgh Cup day Monday

Another of the country pacing cups is on monday.this race has drawn a strong field but not in the same class as the kilmore race.
There is a couple of system tips but be warned this is a very tough meeting.
5/11 Safari. Tough race will be fitter for one start back from spell in which it started favorite. Main Dangers 6 / 7/ 8.
6/2 Sportspower. like this horse in good stable and also will be fitter for one run back from spell .Main dangers 7/10
Marybourgh cup
Im having something on the 4 Robric jonboy unlucky in Nyah cup not a bad run at Kilmore in sprint, there is a lot of chances but i have narowed it down to five. 4 Robric jonboy 9 Ok windmere won Nyah cup then well beaten in Kilmore cup 7 Dontfencemein second in Kilmore cup gives it strong claims here. 1 Bel cardo master is drawn to lead and could give them something to chase. 13 Manwarra maker off tough mark 3o mtrs but is tough horse and cant be left out. There is also several other chances but cant tip them all and think if you box up these five will go close to a collect.

Newcastle Results

Sand pebbles much improved run and finished fast to grab 2nd behind the 2 Adacrombie dexter so we picked the quinlla.
Typhoon grace nice run for a first starter to come home hard and finish third worth following.
Keltic lad unplaced.
Anyone who follows these tips would have got the trifecta in the 2nd race as all horses were mentioned on this site last week.

8/9 keltic grace Will be long odds but did win trial here on wednesday in fast time so may improve.
Marybourgh
2/2 Xandu rock Will go close in this was unlucky last start.

Derby Day

My favourite day of racing on the calendar. Four Group One's, 9 Group races overall. What more could you possibly want? Incidentally, I have done this assessment on the assumption of a dead track.

Race 1: Carbine Club Stakes.

Very open race to kick off the program. Won last year, of course, by Al Maher, who subsequently won the Australian Guineas in the Spring.

Deregulate is $3.80 favourite but I think that price is too short, and anyway, I don't think he is the best chance here. Was second last start to Headturner over 1800m on Turnbull Day, but the form of that race is I think, questionable. I think he is better suited to more ground as well. I concede, however, he is very well weighted with just 52.5 Kg on his back.

Testafiable finally gets a good chance to win here. Last start was 10th in the Caulfield Guineas, but owing to the massive interference and heavy track, that can be forgiven. Form before then was solid, competitive in the Manikato Stakes and beaten less than two lengths by outstanding Sydney 3YO Paratroopers over 1400m at Randwick. He faces a much easier task here and I think he is good value at $7.50.

Robechon, Letter of Intent, and Airstream coming out the Listed 3YO race over 1400m race on Caulfield Cup day will make their presence felt, but it is difficult to line up the form. Of those three I prefer Airstream, as he is the best weighted and was hitting the line hardest. Roubechon is a talented galloper, and the best in the business, Noel Callow takes the ride, but he is badly off at the weights.

Suggested bet: Testafiable (E/W).

Race 2: L'Oreal Paris Plate.

Queen of the Hill is a weighted certainty. Jet Spur and Stratum have to haul 60 Kg up the straight, and Ferocity 57.5, whereas Queen of the Hill gets in with 54.5 Kg, and Captain Callow on her back. Weight will make all the difference here, and I can't see her getting beaten.

Suggested bet: Queen of the Hill straight out.

Race 3: Saab Quality.

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last week, I'm sure you have heard about Mr. Celebrity's Geelong Cup run, where he missed the start by five lengths, charged home to be beaten about a neck, and was declared a non runner. I can't honestly see anything beating him home. Confectioner is clearly the second best horse in the race, but may find it tough with 58 Kg. Dizelle could run a big race, so look out for her.

Suggested bet: Exacta. Mr Celebrity - Field ($14 for $1)

Race 4: Wakeful Stakes

Astronomia dominates the market which, in light of her dominant win at Caulfield last start is to be expected. She is the deserved favourite.

Looking for value however, I think we should look in the direction of the other Gai Waterhouse runner, Beauty Watch. She has always given the impression of a horse who would get better over ground, and be suited to Flemington. She ran a cracking race to beat home Mnemosyne in the Flight Stakes, and the race she ran subsequently was that of a filly looking for extra distance.

Suggested bet: Beauty Watch (E/W)

Race 5: Myer Classic

The first of the Group One's. In light of her brilliant run in the Cox Plate, Lotteria dominates the market, at about $3. However, I think there are a couple of things to be wary of. Firstly, she had an extremely tough run last week, and backing up at a shorter distance will not be easy. Secondly, when observing the horses in the mounting yard before the Cox Plate last week, I must say I cannot remember seeing a horse look as magnificent as she did. Gai could not possibly have had her any better. What goes up, must come down. She is a class horse, but is vulnerable here.

Shania Dane is the one I want to be on here. Toorak Hcp run was full of merit after trying to lead all the way, was more than competitive with Sydney's best sprinter-milers (including the aformentioned Lotteria). Beadman should be able to take a nice sit and get to the front at the right time.

Suggested bet: Shania Dane (E/W)

Race 6: VRC Derby

Last Saturday at the Valley, I ran into Graeme Rogerson, walking from his stalls back to mounting yard, and I asked him about Duelled. He said he was extremely confident about the Derby, and "if we can win here it would be nice, but the main target is the Derby". So of course, I went and backed Manton.

Duelled won.

I'm inclined to stick with Graeme here though. The way in which Duelled was able to make two runs, getting up to third from about last at the 800m, and then able to tough it out over the closing stages and hold out Manton was the run of a real stayer.

Pendragon has been supremely impressive this Spring, but frankly, $2.70 is no value, and from barrier 15 he is going to find it very hard.

I find it hard to leave out Gallant Guru, except that over the years the Geelong Classic has proved a very weak form line into the Derby. Could well show up.

Suggested bet: Duelled (E/W)

Race 7: Mackinnon Stakes

Lad of the Manor will win this. How Activation is favourite I don't know. It is absolutely bizarre to me. He has beaten absolutely nothing. My biggest concern is Desert War.

Suggested bet: Lad of the Manor (whatever you are betting, triple it)

Race 8: Salinger Stakes

Absolutely cracking race here, with any number of chances I could easily justify. I am going to go with the forgotten runner, the Hong Kong horse Cape of Good Hope.

Now, he of course gets his head kicked in by Silent Witness every time he races, but he is more than competitive when he can get away from his bogey man.

He won the Golden Jubilee (the best sprint race in Britain, won by Choisir a couple of years ago) in race record time, and of course in Australia last Autumn won the Australia Stakes, and was third to Fastnet Rock and Alinghi in the Lightning. He is not well off at the weights, but I think $14 justifies having a nibble.

Last year's winner Takeover Target and headcase Falkirk are the main dangers.

Suggested bet: Cape of Good Hope (E/W)

Race 9: Yallambee Stud Stakes

I was all fired up to back Recapitalize, and then the barrier draw comes out and he is starting on the other side of the Maribyrnong!

In light of this, I am going to go with the in form Volitant. He has won his last two, impressively, isn't badly off at the weights, will go forward and lead, and will be very, very hard to chase down.

Suggested bet: Volitant (E/W)

Friday Ballarat and Shepparton

Very confident of a winner at Ballarat and also a couple of other good chances.
2/11 Imqteeboy. Run had to be seen to be believed last start, galloped before start tailed off then caught field and went 3 wide to finish 3rd not beaten far.Driver change is significant Only draw back is now outside front draw.
4/5 Oliver khan. Fitter for one run and is an eachway chance here.
4/7 Damoan ross. Was dissapointing last start after good win at Terang former Kiwi in same stable as Imqteeboy and big chance here.

Shepparton
2/2 Disengaged. Natural improvement would see this horse very hard to beat although quite a hard field 6 8 9 look other chances.
9/7 Glasscutters atom. is first up since June but has trialed well here good eachway chance.

Kilmore summary

Very hard day with a few of the shorties being beaten. The biggest dissapointment to me was Sokyola whose best form may now behind him but perhaps a bit premature to write him of just yet.
Did manage to get a few winners and placegetters in the horses i mentioned but didnt bet myself today as too hard.

Posted by Barney in Trot Tips at 08:00 PM | Comments (0) | Permalink

Bendigo monday

Have a couple at Bendigo and we should go close to getting a winner.
3/7 Ruthless knight Can do a bit wrong in its races but did trial well at Marybourgh last week and not a bad run before that could go close in this.
6/8 Oscardelafighter From strong stable wide draw against but some sort of chance on trial win at Cranbourne.

Kilmore Cup meeting Sunday

Have had a bit of a look at the program and think it is a very hard meeting with a few shorties that should win.
In the first 7 Hombre higgins should prove too strong perhaps 5 /6 /8 for the tri
2 Small field but looks very open perhaps the 2/5 and 6
3 Interested in the 10 Toppie otara is in tonight at Ballarat but if starts maybe worth a $1 each way.
4 The nine Bel cardo master Likes the stand and good each way .the favorite will be the 12 who at last standing start galloped.
5/8 Sokoyola probably worth the cost of admission to see this horse alone is getting set for the miracle mile should win this perhaps 1/4 9 for quin and tris
6 A very average trotters race perhaps the three Always a rainbow each way
7 The Kilmore cup and for a change all horse are of the scratch mark with no handicaped horses starting.Very hard race with best chances seem to be 10 Robin hood 5 Sequioahs spirit 1 Ok windemrer who goes well from the stand and the 12 Scruffy murphy.
8 Keep an eye on the 4 Classy cullen who is having first start in Australia 12 Let thepartybegin has ability but erratic
9 Also hard race but the 5 Ambro excel looks the one to beat but keep an eye on the6 if gets start is very smart also the 2 won for us during the week and i always respect the 8.

Alta calypso won for us in a fairly good field.

Ballarat.
2/12 ruthless knight Was in market last start when brok e in score up so did well to finish fourth chance at odds(is in Bendigo on monday off the front)
5/10 Safari horse from this stable do improve and fast trial winner at Ballarat but is first up respect.
8/4 Norm gallagher first starter in good stable and trial winner at Ballarat good chance in even field

Cox Plate

Here is your runner by runner preview of the Weight for Age Championship of Australasia.

1. Greys Inn

5YO Horse

(Zabeel - Great Verdict)

Jockey: W. Marwing

Trainer: Mike De Kock

Barrier: 2

Odds: $16

Top class South African horse whose second behind Vengeance of Rain in the QE2 in Hong Kong is an outstanding form line for this. Sure to take a great deal of improvement from fourth in the Yalumba last start. Absolute must for the multiples, but not certain he has quite what it takes to win. Should get a nice run just off the pace.

2. Lad of the Manor

6YO Gelding

(Zabeel - Matrona)

Jockey: B. Johns

Trainer: Roger Hoysted

Barrier: 7

Odds: $10
Has been in outstanding form this preparation, winning the Liston and Feehan, and second beaten less than a length by Makybe Diva in the Turnbull. The two main factors in his favour are his love for the Valley, where he has won four from four, and the fact that he should be able to get a perfect run slightly forward from midfield. Running him down will be very, very difficult. Excellent winning chance.

3. Super Kid

6YO Horse

(Gaius - Pompeii Pride)

Jockey: N. Rawiller

Trainer: John Moore

Barrier: 5

Odds: $21

Two time Hong Kong G1 winner who has been very impressive coming second to Barely A Moment in both the DRC Cup and the Toorak, both when condeding substantial weight. However, a Cox Plate is a different proposition and I don't think he has quite what it takes to be competitive in a race of this class. General opinion of international racing experts (I don't claim to be one) is that he is a rung below the top flight. Should be safe to leave out but cannot write off completely.

4. Confectioner

5YO Gelding

(Bubble Gum Fellow - Princess Blue)

Jockey: C. Williams

Trainer: David Hayes

Barrier: 12

Odds: $18

One of the form horses of the Spring with a win in the Craiglee and placings in the Turnbull and Yalumba (the latter in which he was slaughtered by Williams). In my opinion, this horse is more a staying type who will be better suited by a longer distance, or a track such as Flemington when he has more time to wind up and put in a long sustained run. Also, with barrier 12 jockey faces the dilemma of going forward and possibly getting caught wide or going back and being forced to out sprint Makybe Diva and Xcellent. Can't see him showing up here. Get on now for the Sandown Classic!

5. Desert War

5YO Gelding

(Desert King - High Heels)

Jockey: L. Cassidy

Trainer: Gai Waterhouse

Barrier: 1

Odds: $18

Temperamental horse who seems to have got his mind back together in his last couple of runs, with wins in the Hill and Epsom in Sydney. I think he will will lead and the tempo will be moderate, so it will be a difficult proposition catching him. Against that, he may now handle the Melbourne way of going and lacks class in comparison to some of these others. One for the multiples.

6. Fields of Omagh

8YO Gelding

(Rubiton - Finneto)

Jockey: S. King

Trainer: David Hayes

Barrier: 10

Odds: $21

Grand old campaigner who has been going extremely well this preparation. Although he seems to show up every year, I don't believe that he has the scope to improve that some others do, and therfore I can't see him winning. Throw him in for third in your trifecta, but that's as far as I can see him going.

7. Tosen Dandy

Second in Cranbourne Cup at last start is all you need to know. Disgrace he is in the field.

8. Xcellent

4YO Gelding

(Pentire - Excelo)

Jockey: M. Coleman

Trainer: Mike Moroney

Barrier: 13

Odds: $7

He is the only horse in this field who I believe has the capacity to be a horse of the calibre of, say, if not a Kingston Town, then a Better Loosen Up or Northerly. I say this because his deeds on the other side of the Tasman already would put him in this class. Nevertheless, it is an entirely different proposition over here.

I am not as concerned as some by the wet track in light of his failure in the AJC Derby because firstly, a Heavy at Randwick is a vastly different proposition to dead/slow at Moonee Valley. Secondly, his preparation for the AJC Derby could be described as inadequate at best, flying in two days before, and thirdly, on his breeding, there is nothing to say he is a duck but also, nothing to say he will be a duffer.

His run in the Mudgway Stakes was simply outstanding, running over the top of a field headed by the classy Miss Potential, and in the Kelt on 1 October, he nearly got knocked over, recovered, overtook the field in a burst from the 500-300, then seemed a bit lost at the front but held on to win comfortably.

If he puts it all together, I believe he will win.

9. Outback Prince

4YO Horse

(Desert Prince - Terrestial)

Jockey: D. Beadman

Trainer: Anthony Cummings

Barrier: 6

Odds: $126

Not the worst horse in the race (second or third worst), but simply not good enough.

10. Makybe Diva

7YO mare

(Desert King - Tugela)

Jockey: G. Boss

Trainer: Lee Freedman

Barrier: 4

Odds: $2.15

Whichever way you look at it, the race centres around this superb mare. However, I have to admit I don't believe she is as good as she is made out to be, but that is another topic for another day.

To tell you something you don't know, she has been in great form this Spring, winning the Memsie, beaten a head in the Feehan, and winning the Turnbull.

On proven form she deserves to be the favourite, but the odds to me are massive unders. Firstly, this is a top line field with a good number of other winning chances. Secondly, coming from behind at Moonee Valley and navigating your way through a big field is never an easy proposition, and I think she really is a stayer who needs a long sustained run to get to her best, and isn't blessed with an outstanding turn of foot.

The horse most likely to win, but not the one I would be betting on.

11. Sky Cuddle

NO.

12. Lotteria

4YO Mare

(Redoute's Choice - Rose Reward)

Jockey: C. Munce

Trainer: Gai Waterhouse

Barrier: 8

Odds: $31

She can't win (sprinter-miler IMO) but is a very interesting proposition nonetheless as she will probably lead, or sit outside the leader. If they don't go too fast it will set things up for Lad of the Manor. If the pace is keen, it will help Makybe Diva and Xcellent.

13. God's Own

3YO Colt

(Redoute's Choice - Angel In Disguise)

Jockey: S. Baster

Trainer: Bart Cummings

Barrier: 14

Odds: $9

His Caulfield Guineas win was good but it wasn't as good as it was made out to be. Paratroopers stopped - he did not come through with a withering burst. The new Bel Esprit.

14. Hotel Grand

3YO Colt

(Grand Lodge - Terrestial)

Jockey: J. Ford

Trainer: Anthony Cummings

Barrier: 11

Odds: $13

Lucky to win Champion Stakes (I will go to my grave knowing Pendragon was a certainty beaten - thank you Rod Quinn). 3YO's have a generally poor record in this race and although he looks promising, I don't think he has what it takes to win here.

In summary, my selections are as follow:

1. Xcellent
2. Makybe Diva
3. Lad of the Manor
4. Greys Inn
5. Desert War

I think it should be a fantastic race whoever wins.

Best of luck punters.

Tim.

Lucky punch unplaced
Disengaged 2nd at good odds
Pretty magic third also at big odds
All who follow should have finished in front

Geelong Cup

I like Men At Work in the big one. Only goes up 1.5 Kg on his Metropolitan third placing, when absolutely slaughtered by Boss (to his credit, Boss admitted it was a shocker). Railings has since franked the form, I think it is safe to say.

Steven King goes on here, and from Barrier 1 shouldn't have to go around too many. As usual, it is an open and interesting race with some top line gallopers and bush battlers mixed together.

$6.50 is a very appealing price.

In the Classic, I think Gallant Guru has what it takes. Half brother to AJC Derby winner Gold Guru, he has worked through his classes nicely over in SA. Normally SA form doesn't hold up, but I think there is a lot to like about this one. Holly Go Lightly franked the form with a second placing behind Astronomia in the 3YO fillies race over 2000m at Caulfield last Saturday.

Very good chance, $3 is a bit keen though.

Bendigo Tuesday

Have a few tonight and think we might have found a smokey.
2/3 Agean Lady 7yo mare having first start from a very astute stable. Have checked trial results and has only trialed the once here where it qualified.Could be set for first up go monitor betting.
3/2 Arbitros. Frst up for over twelve months and in good stable each way.
5/8 Retlaw Will be big odds and is a rough chance on trial win here has won before at big odds so each way.
7/2 Diamond paul. Nice draw helps it chances and also has won here.
7/7 Lucky punch Unwanted in betting last start is better than that and good local stable can improve.
8/6 Pretty magic will be fitter for last run and doesnt have to improve much to win this.
8/10 Disengaged First starter who won a trial at Shepparton in good time so each way first up.

Results Saturday

Not much joy last night only the one placing from the three starters but not a great deal of damage either.
Deapooli Never saw race so cant comment but unplaced
Dream mover unplaced and dissapointing as thought ir would place, the horse that i thought would win did and is going well Abercrombie dexter.
Metero Prince was probably our best chance and ran accordingly finishing second after leading and setting fast pace, just weakened on run and woth following. The other two are now out of system.
Robric Jonboy.. Was also dissapointing although think Swish (Max Wishart driver) may have been a victim of circumstances as got away well and had to check to miss galloper and was caught on rails and stayed there until tried to use cheats lane but was too far back. I really expected the horse to go forward early and probably death seat as is a strong stayer .Oh well easy come easy go.

Nyah Pacing cup

Tonight is the first of the country cups so i have had a bit of a look at it and think i might be able to get the winner.
7/11 Robric jonboy is just a shade below top class but this race should suit goes ok from stand and is pretty tough the other chances seem to be the pole horse from the Manning stable and also the other Manning hore the 9 jilliby spice and also the local who has won its last four 3 Cosmic legacy although this field is harder.so if you box 11 /1. 9. 3 Should go close to a collect

Weekend tips

Very quiet Weekend with the only ones being at Newcastle where we do have a bit of sucess so heres hoping.
1/9 Deapooli. Is on its last run for us won first up then not disgraced in harder race last time seems to race better when driven cold for one sprint.
3/4 Dream mover should be at peak fitness now and has improved at each start this time in hard to see it turning the tables on 8 Abacrombie dexter but could be a good place chance.
9/4 Metoer Prince fast trial winner here on Wednesday and good chance in this although the 5 Ponderosa laughing had good form before let up.

Caulfield Cup Preview

Here is the full, runner by runner preview of one of the great races in Australian racing.

1. Mummify.

D. Nikolic/Lee Freedman

Weight: 57Kg

Odds: $18

Barrier: 20

Proven class horse of the field with no less than five G1 wins, three at Caulfield, and of course won this race in 2003. As he approaches his 50th start, the 6YO son of Jeune is racing as well as ever, as has been evidenced by his last start win in the Craven Plate at Randwick.

Nevertheless, with barrier 20, he will need luck attempting to cross the field to get into a forward position. However, he could possibly race a little off the pace, as he did in his Singapore victory.

Whilst he is a top quality stayer, the barrier, the hefty weight (57Kg), and his need for a bone dry track mean that I can't tip him here, but I wouldn't be surprised if he ran a big race.

2. Rakzalla

K. McEvoy/Saeed Bin Suroor

Weight: 57 Kg

Odds: $81

Barrier: 18

Stranger things have happened, but he looks to be using this race as a lead in to the Melbourne Cup, which he finished ninth in last year. I am not especially au fait with the international form, but I believe he is $81 for a reason.

3. Fight Your Corner

SCRATCHED

4. Eye Popper

S. Fujita/Izumi Shmimizu

Weight: 54 Kg

Barrier: 9

Odds: $61

Japanese horse with some very good 2400m form, and beat home Makybe Diva at his last start. Will hopefully go better than the other Japanese horses to come out here, but attempting to win the Caulfield Cup first up after a spell is extremely difficult. Knockout chance.

5. Plastered

P. Harvey/Lindsey Smith

Weight: 54 Kg

Barrier: 16

Odds: $5.50

Outstanding winner of 2004 VRC Derby and 2005 WA Derby (although the latter is not the strongest race) who has been solid without being spectacular this preparation. I think he's simply a little more dour than many had assessed him.

His last start run in the Turnbull was excellent, as he hit the line hard after encountering some trouble in the straight. It is somewhat unconventional to put a horse into a Caulfield Cup third up, but Lindsey Smith is an unconventional trainer - who gets damn good results.

Barrier 16 is going to make it very difficult for him, but if he can get a nice position one off the fence he should be charging home.

6. Carte Diamond

W. Marwong/Brian Ellison

Weight: 53 Kg

Barrier: 7

Odds: $31

The hurdler who has caused considerable controversy over his inclusion ahead of the likes of Lachlan River (who has subsequently gained a run as an emergency anyway). Has never actually won a Stakes race, and I can't see him doing so here.

7. Sir Dex

Z. Purton/Gregory Hickman

Weight: 53 Kg

Barrier: 1

Odds: $11

I think Sir Dex will be the first runner ever in the Caulfield Cup to have had his sire stand in Pakistan (he was here when he serviced Sir Dex' dam however), so that is a record if nothing else. Nevertheless, I think there is a good chance they may get something else as well!

Sir Dex' form at WFA this campaign has been outstanding, winning the Warwick Stakes first up over 1400m, a narrow second in the Chelmsford, then an outstanding third in the Underwood (when three wide all the way), and another fine run to be fourth in the Turnbull, beaten just over a length.

Going back to winter, he won the Prime Minister's Cup over 2400m at WFA on the Gold Coast. To be winning a Caulfield Cup, you want a horse with both speed and staying ability. Sir Dex has demonstrated both.

Barrier one is sensational, and I would expect him to be in the absolute box seat, one back off the leader, on a moderate tempo, where he will have ample opportunity to demonstrate his brilliant sprint (and you don't run over the top of Dance Hero and Court's In Session over 1400m unless you have that).

He gets 5 Kg weight relief from his recent performances. I believe that he will win, and that he represents the best value - if he was trained by Gai or Lee, had Boss or Oliver riding him, and was by Zabeel, he would be about $5 in my opinion.

8. Stella Grande.

N.Ryan/Lee Freedman

Weight: 52.5 Kg

Barrier: 10

Odds: $81

You simply could not back him on recent form. Won at G2 level and was second in the AJC Derby over Autumn, but has been beaten 9 lengths at his two last starts.

9. Railings

G. Childs/John Hawkes

Weight: 52 Kg

Barrier: 12

Odds: $11

Impressive winner of AJC Metropolitan. Metropolitan winners have a very poor record in the Caulfield Cup, and I can't see this changing. The thing is, assuming that the tempo is favouring the backmarkers, I cannot see him outsprinting say, Plastered and Dizelle to the finish line. D. Beadman opted for Dizelle, so we know who he thinks is a better chance of the two, and the opinion of Australia's best jockey is good enough for me.

10. Demerger

D. Dunn/Danny O'Brien

Weight: 51.5

Barrier: 11

Odds: $21

Won Adelaide Cup by seven lengths in the Autumn. Her performances this campaign have been good without being spectacular, and looks a very good Melbourne Cup chance. Will run on well but I can't see her winning, for the same reason I can't see Railings winning.

11. Dizelle

D. Beadman/John Hawkes

Weight: 51.5 Kg

Barrier: 21

Odds: $14

Has mixed her form this Spring, going 2/10/3/11. Mind you, she has excuses for her poor runs. In the Hill Stakes (10th) she was only beaten 2.3 lengths charging home off a slow tempo. In the Turnbull (11th) copped severe interference in the straight.

She will be at the very back of the field, but if anyone can weave his way through, it is Darren Beadman. Her one run over 2400m, was absolutely brilliant as she leapt out of the ground to win the AJC Oaks. Definite for the multiples, and if they are running on will be hard to hold out.

12. Hollow Bullet

V. Duric/John McArdle

Weight: 51.5 Kg

Barrier: 15

Odds: $51

Top 3YO who hasn't gone on with it as an older horse, althought wet tracks may have a little to do with it. Pretty much in the Railings basket - horse who even if they are running on won't have the class to go with Plastered, Dizelle etc.

13. Portland Singa

L. Cassidy/Neville McBurney

Weight: 51.5 Kg

Barrier: 6

Odds: $21

Won Brisbane Cup by two lengths in the Autumn. Her performances this campaign have been good without being spectacular, and looks a very good Melbourne Cup chance. Will run on well but I can't see her winning, for the same reason I can't see Railings winning.

If it looks like I substituted the word 'Adelaide' for 'Brisbane', and 'seven' for 'two', and copied the rest of Demerger's assessment, it is beacuse I did. These horses are twins in my opinion.

Their colours are almost identical, dark blue with diamond bands, Demerger's white and Portland Singa's pink.

In all seriousness, I think Portland Singa should definitely go in the multiples. She can take a forward position from barrier 6 and has been running on really well over shorter distances.

14. Vouvray

S. Seamer/Peter G. Moody

Weight: 51.5 Kg

Barrier: 14

Odds: $13

This mare really ticks all the boxes. Solid WFA form when marginally outclassed allows her to get very well in at the weights. If she had won any handicaps, you would call her a good old fashioned handicapper.

Has been running on well without being outstanding (is this a recurring theme?). Very good chance. Not a whole lot more to add. Should get back but not too far. S. Seamer is the right man to ride.

15. Wild Iris

Ms K. O'Hara/Guy Walter

Weight: 51.1 Kg

Barrier: 19

Odds: $31

Good to see the good young apprentice Kathy O'Hara get a ride get a go in a big race like this. Couldn't overhaul Mummify in the Craven last start and this is no easier. Can't see her outsprinting Plastered, Vouvray etc. $31 for a reason.

16. El Segundo

D. Gauci/Colin Little

Weight: 49.5 Kg

Barrier: 4

Odds: $3.50

Looking at his last start demolition of the Yalumba Stakes field, and bearing in mind his 7.5 Kg weight drop, El Segundo is the rightful favourite. All things being equal, he would win. But all things are not equal! I think the factors of the big field, the seven day back up, the step up to 2400m, make him no certainty, and certainly the $3.50 is a silly price. If he can put it all together, should win.

17. Irish Darling

D. Moor (a)/Tony Vasil

Weight: 49.5 Kg

Barrier: 3

Odds: $101

No chance. $101 for a reason. Disgrace she is in the field ahead of Natural Blitz.

18. Leica Falcon

C. Williams/Richard Freyer

Weight: 48 Kg

Barrier: 13

Odds: $7

The fairytale story of the cup if he can manage to win it. Very impressive winning the Winning Edge over 2400m last start. Has no weight to carry. Still, it is a massive class rise and despite the light weight I think it will be too much for him.

19. Lachlan River

S. King/John Morrissey

Weight: 51.5 Kg

Barrier: 17

Odds: $31

I keep coming back to this, but although I really like this horse, I cannot see him outsprinting the likes of Vouvray, Plastered and Dizelle to the finish line. Quality stayer who won the QTC Derby, but can't win here.

In summary, this race will be determined substantially by the tempo of the race. I cannot predict how the race will be run exactly, but suffice to say that if the following horses do not go forward, or at the very least midfield, they cannot win:

Stella Grande
Railings
Demerger
Hollow Bullet
Portland Singa
Wild Iris
Irish Darling
Lachlan River

I cannot recommend having anything on these horses.

Also, I cannot see any of the international horses winning, so you can eliminate the following:

Rakzalla
Eye Ppopper
Carte Diamond

This leaves us with the following horses, those quality horses who race on the pace, and the better of the backmarkers:

Mummify
Plastered
Sir Dex
Dizelle
Vouvray
El Segundo
Leica Falcon

Not coincidentally, these horses are the seven most favoured runners.

I anticipate a good track, but if slow or heavy, Mummify and Plastered can't win. Mummify can't handle dead either.

My selections:

Assuming an unbiased track: Sir Dex

Assuming on pace bias: Sir Dex

Assuming run on bias: Plastered

Final top five, anticipating a good track without any particular bias:

1. Sir Dex
2. El Segundo
3. Plastered
4. Dizelle
5. Vouvray

Best of luck, and I all hope that you enjoy what should be an absolutely fantastic race.

Ballarat Thursday

Because of the scarcity of tips at present moment i have decided to go a bit wider to cater for desperates like myself and have come up with one at Ballarat on Thursday.
8/7 Ruthless Knight. Didnt qualify in system but did win a trial at Marybourgh by a wide margin 15 metres and slowed down in last half.On that win should be a good chance in this.

Busters revival

Just a follow up to the run yesterday the horse has been stood down for two trial after breaking in score up and being out of position at start, will keep an eye out for it in future as it does have a bit of ability.

Wednesday tips

Two tonight at Cranbourne and hopefully can improve on our last results.
6/3 Prince Bonton Had good form before spell and has won a trial at Marybourgh in fast time in preparation for this good chance here.
7/5 Heartlite .May have had stable change since last start and has been placed first up before, recent form only fair Warragul trial winner and to be driven by Debbie Quinlan so each way chance first up.

Only have a couple in a quiet week and one at Harold park which i dont normally bet on but ony a country front meeting so maybe worth a little each way.
Harold Park.2/8 Busters revival.Has only had one start and finished a long way back after galloping and do plenty wrong, has been back to the trials and won one last Wednesday at Newcastle in good time so does have ability.
Geelong.
4/9 Breenys crusade. Is on its last chance with me has started favorite at two starts in Australia after having good form in Nz may get a nice trail into race from second row so give one more chance.

System Explanation

Been asked by a few people to explain my system so will endevour to do so here.
The system is based entirely on trial results which i obtain from various sources including on the net at Harness .org.au Trot guide and from several clubs that provide them to me.
Over the years i have refined the times a horse has to run to qualify in my system and have now decided on 2.4 Mile rate in Victoria and 2.2 in Nsw.the difference in the states are simply results as i have found that if a horse runs 2.4 at Newcastle trials it is not really competive in races whereas is Vic they seem to be.
I give each horse three starts or one month in my system then they go off my current databasei only take the winner into account or in the event of a dead heat will put both horses into system.
My main data base would contain about 1000 horses which i leave on for two years before permantly deleting them, i do use the old ones to check if a horse goes ok fresh eg has won after a spell.
The current database contains only eighteen horses which is quite low but times being run at trials right now are quite slow probably caused by weather conditions and the amount of races being held a lot of horses dont seem to be going to trials..
Any one with questions can contact me thru this site or just leave a comment and i will reply.

Cauflield Guineas Day

Huge day of racing at The Heath tomorrow. Of course, you never know how the bias on that disgraceful track will play, so bet at own risk!

Race 2 - The Boot. Nice type who has been freshened and should run well.

Race 3 - Jadescent. Nice filly who looks a class above them. Queen of the Hill the obvious danger.

Race 4 - Strikeline. Lilando and All Bar One will set a cracking pace out front and this mare should be able to run over the top of them. Any rain will only help.

Race 5 - Grey Song. Each way. Very smart 2400m horse, has been out of form and at $26 is a decent chance of turning it around.

Race 6 - Greys Inn. Most impressive visitor. First up over 2000m is tough but is a seasoned traveller and has done it before. Beaten only a length behind Vengeance of Rain in the QE2 in Hong Kong.

Race 7.

If Good - Paratroopers
If Dead - Stratum
If Slow/Heavy - Red Dazzler

Race 8 - Our Smoking Joe. Has been racing in great heart and with a bit of give in the track is very well suited. Great barrier which is very important. Captain Callow on.

Race 9 - Aqua D'Amore - Gai trained mare who has outstanding first up record. Classy and has the Captain on.

Best of luck punters.
