A tale of two jockeys...
Just thought I'd drop a quick message before I head out for NYE.
Firstly, let us look at N. Callow on California Dane. Noel knew he had the best horse, so took a trail one out behind the leader, was never in any trouble, and won easily.
Danny Beasley, on Fashions Afield, put her in a pocket behind the leaders, which on the tight Doomben circuit is always a lottery. Beasley went for a run between two horses, the door shut, and she ran fifth.
If you are on a good thing - ride them like it. That is what Noel did. Beasley should have a look at the tape. I'm not talking through my kick either, as I didn't back Fashions Afield today.
As it is, Fashions price for the MM 3YO hasn't exactly blown, but I'm still confident about her for her main mission.
Results today mixed. California Dane won, Transferral missed a place (came up a lot shorter than I anticipated as well), and Leonurus second.
Happy new year and good punting.

Saturday Geelong and Newcastle and Echuca sunday
Geelong
4/6 Lombo musketeer. Much improved last start when led all the way is drawn to do same here so good chance
4/10 Imquteeboy. raced ok last start a bit worried about draw as will have horses in front of it as last time was outside 2nd row Has a heap of ability and is the danger
Newcastle.
Going to have withdrawals here as Freddy is not racing .
4/1 Janbob. Was unlucky last week and chance to go close an old favorite of ours Abacrombie dexter is going around again and will be hard to beat take them in quinella and tris you will go close.
7/4 Martha claydon Stablemate of freddy and will be hard to beat in this.
8/9 Forrest scooter. got caught in death seat last week can upset these with right run.
9/10 Hi craft is an emergency but has a rough chance if gets a run.
Echuca Sunday
1/1 Cam keep a secret. Was only 4th in heat of this race but did win a trial prior to it at Kilmore which gives it chance here.
3/9 Baltic ice. Got to far back last start seems a bit of form i n this race but will finish hard.
This will be the last post for this year so would like to wish you all happy new year and good punting and many winners from this site.
Cheers Barney

Saturday 31/12
Hopefully we can see in the New Year on a winning note, with a bit of bonus beer money!
Moonee Valley
R3, no.1: California Dane
Will be winning. Hopefully get a quote somewhere near even money.
R4, no.3: Transferral
On face value couldn't have him after shocking first up run. But this horse has a history of putting in a bad one first up, then running well second up. Staying type who has won at distance however. Should be at nice odds. Meets mediocre bunch here.
R6, no.3: Leonurus
Has been there and thereabouts this prep witout breaking through. Last start at Flemington was good, and with added fitness, should be too good for moderately performed lot.
Perth Cup
Black Tom
Last run was huge with great final 600m. Early Express who led, only won due to farcical pace - 50-1 shot on his outside ran second. Two miles will find him out.
Magic Millions 3YO
TAB Sportsbet is currently offering $2.40 on Fashions Afield for this race. This is a significantly better price than other bookies. Fashions Afield is one of Australia's best 3YO sprinting fillies, along with Virage De Fortune and Mnemosyne. Last start she won the G1 , $350,000 Flight Stakes, defeating Mnemosyne (amongst others). The second favourite, Diamondsondinside, won a $12,000 Open Handicap at Caloundra, defeating Wolfman. Although the losers of those races are both trained by John Hawkes, I don't think it is necessary to ask him which is better.
Please, for your own benefit, go and have something on before she wins race 6 at Doomben tomorrow. She will start $1.20 or so and therefore not really worth backing - but watch her MM price tumble after she wins.
Back on New Year's Day with the tips for Standish day on Monday.

Leeton Monday night
Have found a border hopper going up to Leeton for its first start and maybe worth having something on as it has trialed well at Shepparton
6/3 Triple vance. Stable is known for first up plunges and did win a trial at Mooroopna by big margin then led all the way at Shepparton so does have ability. The 5 from the Manning stable is smart but capable of big first up race.Be warned there is a lot of first starters in the race.

Lombo Musketeer also resumed from spell with a strong win as deathseated but was too strong also favoriite.
Me doll i kit. led and nearly caused an upset finished 2nd to the horse i thought would win the 5

Land ruler. Unplaced but was a nice run sat one out one back but was held up when 3 wide horses went around came home ok for 4th.

Wednesday tips Marybourgh Geelong and Bathurst
An interesting day with a few good chances pretty confident at bathurst and think the one at Marybourgh may be a first up chance.
Marybourgh
1/3 the quiet village. Is first up since july 2004 but has won 2 races here and did win first up Bendigo trial winner go close.
Geelong
4/3me dolli kit. Lightly raced and first up did improve at second race start not a bad field this with the 5 and 6 being hard to beat each way chance.
5/2 Lombo musketeer. Is first up here and placed last time first up so each way chance.
6/7 Imqteeboy. This is a horse we have tipped before does heaps wrong but has a lot of ability take on trust but can win if does eveything right
7/4 Land ruler Placed first up and fitter now chance here.
Bathurst.
Very tough race is the only one we have tips in but think we can get a result
4/3 Roll on seymour .Felt beaten by the barrier last week in heats when it came from outside second row to death seat much better raw here and is my selection.
4/9 Wicker blue .Also tipped this horse last week in heat where it gave nothing else a chance akward 2nd row draw makes it harder but is main danger to the 3 couple with the 5 and should go close to the trifecta.
Heres hoping good luck all

Thursday Ballarat and Kilmore
Have an interesting horse at Ballarat and one that was dissapointing last start but has trialed well since.
1/9 Galvin street ,has only had the one start and was favorite in that but did heaps wrong and finished last.has trialed well at Ballarat in preperation for this and could be a good eachway chance.
7/1Prince Bonton. Would probably declare this as my Christmas turkey horse but for the fact a junior driver is in the cart and im not sure that it is that easy to drive.Back in the barrier draw and will win if does things right.
7/5 Trebla trebla is first up and will find the 1 hard to beat place chance maybe.
Kilmore.
only the one and not real fussed
5/3Garry wild. didnt do much on Sunday and would have to improve to figure in this. Rough each way chance.

Wednesday 14/12
Just a couple for today:
R1, no.1: Safari Sunbeam
Mick Price trained 3YO filly who had a couple of runs in her first prep in winter, amongst them an impressive win at Sandown.
Shown a bit of ability, and although a bit harshly weighted, doesn't meet much here.
Straight out.
R2, no.9: Cadet
Lloyd Williams 3YO who ran well at debut, beaten a length by the smart Florizel. Gets 5 Kg on Florizel who is in the same race today, in fact only has to carry 51.5 Kg. Very good chance.
Each way.
R5, no.3: Fasliyista
Mike Moroney trained mare who has made the trip over to Australia after being competitive at G3 level in NZ. Encouraging debut in VRC meet at Ballarat and gets a little bit more ground which will help.

Results Sunday
A ok day for us 2 winners out of the three tips but really one was to short to back but still a winning day.
Our Fiona 3rd but no tote dividend was backing up from moonee valley last night which i didnt notice. Why it would have went around in a race that couldnt win instead of saving for today i wouldnt know but was fairly ordinary today as didnt finish race off after using sprint lane.
Bendal rose Won but at $1.30 should have won by more to my mind as they got close to it at the finish. Will be fitter for run.
Hearts beat true also led all the way and really never in any danger at all. This horse has been good to us as won 2 out of its three starts for us.

Kilmore Monday
Have three and all should be chances in a hard meeting.
4/2 Maddisons dream. was a little dissapointing when resuming from a spell and starting favorite ,should be fitter now and improvement expected in a very hard race.
6/2 Garry wild. Form is not that good but has trialed well at Geelong and also god chance in open race.
7/7 Safari. Racing in peak form has had a short break and went back to the trials where it one one at Ballarat in quick time.Has B Gath in the sulky here and will be hard to beat 8 9 11 all have chances.
Good punting all

Saturday results
12 tips
4 wins ($3.90, $2.20, $3.80, $2.80)
2 seconds ($1.40, $1.20)
I declared Readyforcatherine, but I know one of the owners of the horse that won, and they didn't even think it could.
Enough winners to make me happy, but the prices were disappointing.
Takeover Target was back to his brilliant best. Someone mention to Joe Janiak that there is this race called the Newmarket Handicap, and it is worth $1 million, and it actually makes sense for the horse to be in that, rather than $200,000 Queensland Group 3's.

Results Saturday night
Well a good result for us as both our tips won and a good price for Abercrombie dexter $6.00 up here Freddy corday started odds on and led all the way.
System actually held up at the Valley when Frans jewell won as we tipped it last start paid $15 but the losers do out weigh the winners in town.

Thursday and Friday results and Sunday tips
A frustrating couple of days no winners but a few nice price placegetters so we showed a profit.
Thursday geelong
Flying lad started favorite and finished 2nd
Chelsea hanover 3rd and was a fair run ntd.
Friday Bendigo
Sky rebel unplaced finished last the 7 won the race as i said.
Land ruler finished 3rd and paid ok was a fair run
Ballarat Friday.
Premiun reserve. This was our chance for a big priced winner but had to settle for 2nd paid $10.90 as was outsider of field.
Robric jonboy 3rd i wish all horses were as honest as this one another nice run from a back mark.
Davisons destiny. The opposite to robric this horse mixes form finished last in this.
Warragul Sunday
Have three here and quite confident of a winner or three.
2/3 our fiona. well beaten last start but fitter now and can go close in this.
4/3 Bendall rose. Class horse in new stable goes well fresh and should win this.
5/2 Heart beats true. likes to lead and should here go close.

Saturday 10/12
Melbourne
R2, no.5: Be Delicious
Smart looking mare racing well - blocked for run last start. 1400m suits.
R3, no.2: Change of Class
Good last start only just beaten by Loyal Lauren. Trained by Mick Price. Excellent 2nd up record. On the limit after claim.
R4, no.1: Readyforcatherine
Cannot envisage a scenario in which she does not win. Will be very short.
R5, no.1: Expunge
As above.
R6, no.4: Dismissal
Handy sprinter on his day with fantastic first up record (6:2-0-2). Hawkes/Shinn.
R7, no.10: Breezy
Won easily in midweek Metro class and no reason cannot go on with it here.
R8, no.1: Forest Spy
In top form and should keep it going here. No reason he can't.
Perth
R8, no.1: Roman Arch
Back up in distance and WFA suits. Last start can be forgiven. $12 appealing on each way basis.
Sydney
R6, no.4: Come In Spanner, no.6: Malcolm quinella
Malcolm is a potential gun, while a very reliable source has suggested Come In Spanner is due for a big one.
R7, no.6: Grandiloquent
Strolled in last start and will do so again.
Brisbane
R2, no.4: Coincidental
In cracking form and should go on with it.
R4, no.8: Templin
Appalling ride last start. Shocking. Disgraceful. Jockey has been sacked and Seamer goes on. Form before that good - hitting line hard. 2020m here will help.
R7, no.1: Takeover Target
From barrier 1 should have too much class for them here. Joe Janiak is an idiot however, so be wary. Quinella with no.17, Mastermind.
Best of luck.

Newcastle Saturday night
Only the two at Newcastle but i think they will both go very close.
2/10 Freddy corday. Very impressive leading all the way from this barrier last week and can do so again.
4/8 Abercrombie dexter will give this a big shake.

Results Tuesday and Thursday and Friday tips
A winner and one unplaced was the story of tuesday night with Merri Operator appreciating the drop in class and winning quite easily at an alright price in my opinion.
James Dillenger finished last after galloping at start was unwanted in betting so wait until it shows some more.
Wednesday we have no tips at all so will do Thursday and also Friday now and update Friday if need be.
Geelong
4/9 Flying lad. Is first up since April but has won first up before so each way chance here.
6/5 Chelsea hanover. Was a nice first up run and fitter now good chance.
Bendigo
3/4 Sky rebel. first up and hard to see it beating the 7 but place chance here.
7/6 Land ruler. Good each way chance here.
ballarat
1/8 Premium reserve. Should be long odds and rough each way chance.
5/12 Robric jonboy. Good run at Charlton and loves the standing start will give good sight.
6/5 davisons destiny. Favorite last start and fitter now will go very close here.
Will add any additional ones later on.

Result kilmore and Nyah tips
Kilmore
Mister marney. Finished unplaced didnt have a lot of room and may improve next start not beaten that far.

Think we may get a winner here and another real good chance as both down in class from last start.
5/4 Merri operator. I think a bit better than these forget last run as had no luck checked and broke good chance to lead and win here.
8/4 james dillenger. Not a bad debut run when knee boot slipped wasnt far away and could improve here.
.
Good luck all

Results Bendigo
Another night without a winner but not all bad as did select the quinella in the 8th but dissapointed with the run of Prince Bonton. Was critical of the drivers in that race letting the leader get such an easy run in front and no one prepared to make a move then all sprinted at once.prince Bonton was set an impossible task but only came home fairly.
Atelier finished 2nd to the horse i said would win.

Just a couple of points...
One thing I want to raise is the renaming of the 'Dulcify' Bar at Morphettville racetrack the 'Makybe Diva' Bar. Sure, it is great to acknowledge an outstanding horse like Makybe Diva, but what about Dulcify?
In the opinion of Colin Hayes, he was the best horse he ever trained.
He had 21 starts for 10 wins, including the 1978 VRC Derby, 1979 Australian Cup, 1979 AJC Derby, 1979 Cox Plate (by seven lengths), 1979 Mackinnon Stakes. He was put down after being galloped on by eventual winner Hyperno in the 1979 Melbourne Cup. He was South Australian through and through, being trained at Lindsay Park by Colin Hayes.
Makybe Diva, on the other hand, has not to my knowledge ever set foot in SA, let alone raced there. She was bred in Great Britain. She was trained by two Victorians, David Hall and Lee Freedman. The only connection is that she is owned by a South Australian.
Sure, we should honour modern day champs. But it shouldn't come at the expense of heroes of the past.
In my view, it is another demonstration of the pathetic administration of South Australian racing (another topic for another time).
