Just a couple of points...
One thing I want to raise is the renaming of the 'Dulcify' Bar at Morphettville racetrack the 'Makybe Diva' Bar. Sure, it is great to acknowledge an outstanding horse like Makybe Diva, but what about Dulcify?
In the opinion of Colin Hayes, he was the best horse he ever trained.
He had 21 starts for 10 wins, including the 1978 VRC Derby, 1979 Australian Cup, 1979 AJC Derby, 1979 Cox Plate (by seven lengths), 1979 Mackinnon Stakes. He was put down after being galloped on by eventual winner Hyperno in the 1979 Melbourne Cup. He was South Australian through and through, being trained at Lindsay Park by Colin Hayes.
Makybe Diva, on the other hand, has not to my knowledge ever set foot in SA, let alone raced there. She was bred in Great Britain. She was trained by two Victorians, David Hall and Lee Freedman. The only connection is that she is owned by a South Australian.
Sure, we should honour modern day champs. But it shouldn't come at the expense of heroes of the past.
In my view, it is another demonstration of the pathetic administration of South Australian racing (another topic for another time).
